Messi, Alba leave Inter Miami win in first-half, will miss next match

Image
Lionel Messi   was substituted due to muscle fatigue in the 37th minute of   Inter Miami CF 's   4-0 win   over   Toronto FC   on Wednesday, only minutes after his former   Barcelona   teammate   Jordi Alba   had also left the field. Miami coach Gerardo Martino said after the match that both Alba and Messi would be evaluated in the coming days, but that neither player would be available to play against Orlando City on Sunday so that they might be ready for the U.S. Open Cup final against Houston Dynamo next Wednesday. "There is no chance they will be there on Sunday. I know we have a final to play [next Wednesday] but they won't go near the pitch if they can't play," said Martino. Messi and Alba, who both started the game after not making the trip for Saturday's 5-2 loss at  Atlanta United FC , were not involved in any particularly heavy challenges or visibly limping but were clearly in some kind of physical discomfort. "They...

Back in the Champions League, Arsenal look like they belong

Image
LONDON -- The excitement was so high at  Arsenal  over their first  Champions League  appearance in six years that they printed the lyrics to the competition's anthem in the matchday program. Not many sang along to "Zadok The Priest" when the time came, but there was an audible cheer as the opening bars rang out across a rain-sodden Emirates Stadium, a cathartic release of the pain suffered through their prolonged absence from Europe's premier club stage. The Gunners were determined to seize their moment back in the big time, and they did not disappoint,  cruising to a 4-0 win  over  PSV Eindhoven  on Wednesday achieved through an authority typically associated with seasoned Champions League campaigners. None of the starting lineup for their previous outing -- a 5-1 home defeat to  Bayern Munich  in March 2017 -- are still at the club, though. In fact, there is only one surviving member of the squad -- midfielder  Mohamed Elneny ...

Taylor Swift partners with Google for a vault song reveal — but it seems there’s been a ‘Glitch’

Image
Taylor Swift fans were struggling Tuesday as the pop sensation sent them on a virtual Easter egg hunt to reveal her new "1989 (Taylor's Version)" track titles — only to be faced with technical difficulties. Swift  announced her upcoming "1989" re-recording  last month while performing in Los Angeles, and that "Taylor's Version" will include previously unreleased songs. Vault songs have been included in her three prior re-recording releases as an extra perk for fans who stream and purchase the albums. Swift previously revealed vault tracks for “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” and “Red (Taylor’s Version)” by releasing a video of scrambled letters. Google  announced Tuesday  that its search function will populate a series of 89 puzzles that fans can solve to eventually reveal the names of those new songs. "You’ll be helping Swifties around the world get out of the woods (or unlock the vault) as everyone collectively solves 33 million puzzles,...

Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

Image
During National Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 – October 15, the U.S. government celebrates the countless contributions of more than 60 million Hispanic Americans, Latinos, Latinas, and Latinx-identifying people to our culture and society. Hispanic Americans are the largest minority group in the United States today, and generations of Hispanic Americans have consistently helped make our country strong and prosperous. They contribute to our Nation beyond description. Hispanic Americans embody the best of our American values, including commitment to faith, family, and country. The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on our government, culture, and economy. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the contributions and the important presence of Hispanic and Latin Americans in the U.S. and within the Department of State. In partnership with the  Hispanic Employee Council of Foreign Affairs Agencies (HECFAA)  , the Department highl...

The August 2023 Consumer Price Index

Image
SEPTEMBER 14, 2023 Headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation was 0.6 percent in August and 3.7 percent over the past year. Both of these rates were a step up from recent inflation reports, and the main factor behind the jump was the August increase in the price of retail gasoline. This price went up 10.6 percent over the month, and gasoline contributed 34 basis points of the overall monthly CPI, or a bit more than half of the 0.6 percent rate (over the past year, the gasoline price is down 3.3 percent). In this blog, we take a brief look at the role of the gasoline price in inflation and how it relates to the pressing question of whether inflationary pressures are reliably easing. The first point to note about the gasoline price is that it is highly volatile. The standard deviation of monthly changes in gasoline prices was 5.7 percentage points from 2000 to 2019. For the overall CPI without energy, the standard deviation was 0.1 percentage point over this period. Another way ...

Unity discovers how real the revenue struggle is ...

Image
NEW YORK, Sept 14 - Virtual reality gears from Pico are displayed on the sidelines of the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore June 23, 2023. Unity Software (U.N) is finding out just how hard the revenue game will be. The $14 billion company’s new plan to climb out of an unprofitable hole makes sense, but also faces considerable pushback.  The strategy seeks to impose fees on video-game developers after certain revenue and install thresholds are met, eliciting a harsh response on social media on Tuesday. After all, even a small charge could make a difference to many of its smaller clients. Unity’s main problem is that its bread and butter is helping mobile games sell ads, a volatile form of income. And privacy initiatives, such as Apple  (AAPL.O)  allowing customers to opt out of data sharing, are hurting. Unity reckons the market will be mostly flat for the rest of the year. The situation evokes what other technology companies, including office-sharing provider WeWork ...
